Ancient Swarmer are a sub-faction of the Ancient Faction that is first encountered during the main story of the Wrath of the Ancients DLC. They can appear in every location using a wormhole and saturate their surrounding with deadly kaion radiation. All Ancient Swarmer enemies can teleport and are able to change into a non-physical form which allows them to become immune to any kind of damage for a short amount of time.
Lore[]
"Ancient Swarmers" is the colloquial name given to the hostile entities that have recently assaulted Colonial settlements and interests throughout the Beltegrades. Their origin and intent remain completely unclear.
Their appearance is accompanied by high levels of kaion radiation, which is usually linked to anomalies such as spatial bypasses, or spontaneous wormholes that occur in Cluster 34. Their ability to use energy-to-matter transformation is not yet understood.
General Info[]
Unlike other Ancient enemies like the Warden, Swarmers were likely used as offensive automatons by the Ancients. They show a more aggressive behaviour and saturate their surrounding with kaion radiation. Like all other Ancient enemies encountered in Cluster 34, Swarmers are not alive and do not have their own will. They are either controlled from a third party or follow programmed instructions.
Swarmers have the ability to change from their physical form into an energy form which makes them look like they consist of a swarm of thousands of smaller entities. Hence they were given the name "Swarmer". In their non-physical form, they absorb all damage dealt to them and transform it into shield energy.

Trivia[]
Among other enemies controlled by Ancients, the player has to fight against waves of Ancient Swarmer enemies when using an Ancient Altar to ascend Equipment or Weapons. The final wave is the boss-fight like encounter with an Ancient Large Swarmer.
