Mainframe Expansions are superior software-type items and are stored in the mission item inventory, which allow the player to upgrade ship attributes.
Acquistion[]
Mainframe Expansions are acquired by combining a stack of three rare Mainframe Components, which are also classed as software-type items, but reside in ship inventory or homebase storage slots prior to combination.
Mainframe Components are spread throughout the game across all the systems, and all locations must be completed in full to acquire all of them. There are however more than enough to supplement a ships equipment upgrades for end game content that it is not strictly necessary to acquire every component and in turn, expansion. Some are rewarded for fully completing areas, some for location challenges, others are looted from secret containers.

Augmenting[]
Each of the six attributes can be upgraded, with each upgrade increasing the attribute's value by +5% each time. The cost of upgrading each specific attribute increases as it is upgraded, with the first costing one Mainframe Expansion (three Mainframe Components), the second costing two Mainframe Expansions (six Mainframe Components), and so on. Each attribute can be upgraded up to five times for a total bonus of +25%.
Mainframe expansions are character-wide and are not specific to ships. Stored expansions and currently leveled attributes will not change when switching ships, unless changed manually.
