Everspace 2 has several different mission types that the player can complete as they progress through the game.

Main missions progress the story and can unlock new systems and other areas.
Side[ | ]
Side missions are nonessential to the story but they can expand upon the player's knowledge of the universe, have important lore implications, and give good rewards.
Challenges[ | ]
Challenges consist of several different specific tasks to complete, rewarding the player with experience, credits, and potentially a discount if the challenge was given by a trading station.
Jobs[ | ]
Jobs are short side missions offered by job boards at certain stations.
Supralight events[ | ]
Supralight events are random locations found while travelling between locations, often with a goal similar to a job or some other basic task.
