Can i trim the component table?[]

Is it important to list the consumables, catalysts and perks that use each component? The descriptions outside of the game also don't serve much purpose beside mimicking what's seen in-game (which i can appreciate, just don't see the benefit of it being on the wiki page).

What i'd like to suggest, is dropping the consumables/catalysts/perks/description columns and adding a new one with a "Used for" heading (or some other/better wording) and simply stating where a component can be used, something like this.

Icon Name Rarity Used for
ES2-Icon-Component-CrystalDiode Crystal Diode Common
  • Consumables
  • Catalysts
  • Perks

I would even go a step further and add the crafting costs, given there's now some room to play with.

Icon Name Rarity Craft Used for
ES2-Icon-Component-CrystalDiode Crystal Diode Common
  • Copper (1)
  • Aetheum Crystal (5)
  • Plasma (4)
  • Consumables
  • Catalysts
  • Perks

If the description absolutely must be included (for whatever reason), i could do something like this (so the lengthy descriptions don't clog up the table). It will sort and keep the descriptions with their parent rows, feel free to test using the table below.

Icon Name Rarity Craft Used for
ES2-Icon-Component-CrystalDiode Crystal Diode Common
  • Copper (1)
  • Aetheum Crystal (5)
  • Plasma (4)
  • Consumables
  • Catalysts
  • Perks
Powerful crystalline guide for electronic currents.
ES2-Icon-Component-FusionCore Fusion Core Uncommon
  • Iron (3)
  • Titanium (2)
  • Mallemite Crystal (2)
  • Consumables
  • Catalysts
  • Perks
Remarkable energy, tiny casing. Use before it expires, and don't drop it.

Any objections to these changes?

I think these are fair changes overall. Adding a column here for crafting costs is nice, though the consumables page could benefit from having crafting info added as well. I'd personally prefer to mimic in-game and keep the descriptions. Though, I'm not sure what exactly the problem is. We have plenty of page width to work with, why not use it (I've been wondering the same for the reduced thumbnail image size reduction on several pages) and have as much info as possible, as long as its not unreadable? With the consumable/catalyst/perks columns condensed into the Used For column, wouldn't there be space for the description in the main row? It can be the last column since its not as important, and then it won't clog up the other info.
Also, I commented on your profile last week, but just in case, I'd like to thank you again for all your edits, and invite you to the Rockfish Games Discord, where we have a discussion channel for the wiki, if you're interested: https://discord.gg/rockfishgames

I suppose it depends on whether you click the expanded view button on fandom to extend page width, by default the pages are condensed and a limited width, i was operating under the assumption most visitors wouldn't know there was an option and thus be viewing each page under that default view. Same logic for the images, oversized images take up width and height and personally i also think it looks a little silly with unnecessarily large images (none of the icons are this huge in the game, why here?).
I'll knock something up for the components in my sandbox page and see how it looks.
I'm already in the discord server, quiet but present.

Updated the components page with new layout and the crafting page section on components. If you see any problems with these changes, feel free to post them here (or revert and state why).
I'll have a go at the consumables page and section of the crafting page next, give that similar treatment to catalysts/components.

Looks great, clever solution! Thanks, Grendal27 (talk) 02:06, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
